Hello Everyone, does someone know what a symbol of the cross on the margin next to Baptism record signifies. Also, there is a latin phrase on this record I could not translate "sus ceper unt eg a sacrofente" I dont see it on many other records.I tried Latin translate with no luck.
Its for an ancestor,
Regina Duran
Baptised 4-17-1658
Nochistlan,Zac.
Parents Andres Duran y Juana de la Ascension
Siblings Joseph Duran 1656, Marcos Duran 1669, Diego Duran 1672,Maria Duran 1778
Also, any info with Duran Grandparents from Nochistlan going further back would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cross and Percent Symbols in Matrimonios

Ruben, where is the older post you found? I would like to read it too. There are helpful guides for deciphering texts, but I cannot find one that addresses symbols in the margin.

I found a marriage record with a similar symbol, and am wondering its meaning there. The record is;
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-18453-5545-67?cc=1874591&wc=… : accessed 28 Feb 2014), Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1979 > Mexico, Jalisco, Catholic Church Records, 1590-1979 > Colotlán > San Luis Obispo > Matrimonios 1720-1752 > image 34 of 508.

It shows the marriage of Diego Pinedo (mulatto) and Chatarina de la Cruz (of Tepuliche). Below that notation in the margin is a symbol like our percent (%) and a cross with circles at each of the four ends, outlined with four curves.

What does that mean?

Cross and OJO Symbols in Matrimonios

I do see that it looks more like OJO than a percent symbol, but still don't understand its meaning. Looking a few pages forward and back from the record of interest, the notation, "OJO" appears on only a few records.

What is the significance of the cross and the other symbol in the margin?

Thanks

Symbol of the Cross on

Ruben Rojas

I found my answer thanks to an old post from Bill Figueroa. From what I read it was used to indicate the child was Spaniard and not mixed.

The latin phrase has something to do with Godparents because its right before their names. Its not very clear but I beleive it reads "suscep erunt eg asacrofonte"
Thanks

I wanted to add that the Symbol of the Cross is hand drawn and filled in (It really stands out), and Im curious why some Old Baptism Records have it next to only certain names and not others. I tried researching this but did not find an answer.

Thanks
