With the help of Armando, I have identified my first connection back to Spain.
About 1759, Pedro de Choperena of Aranaz, Navarra, Spain married to Maria Bauptista de Yndart. Upon reaching Mexico, she gave birth to Juaquin Choperena born 1771 in Totatiche, Jalisco. Juaquin married Victoriana Martinez on 16 Sep 1801.

I have posted a chart in my file folder:

http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/UncleRelic

There are numerous family names that be of interest to the Forum, including Larrea, Caballero, Martinez, Avila, Holguin, del Real, Loretto, Ortega, Valdes, Escobedo, Pinedo, Ramos, and Viramontes.

Hopefully, someone will find a connection to my line.
Saludos,
Roy

My First Identified Spanish Ancestor

Roy,

Congrats! What a find, I am not too familiar with the Choperena family, but it has been established that they are Navarrense, It is also important to look for his Dispensa de Ultramarino in the Sagrada Mitra de Guadalajara, a document in which a foreigner or peninsular had to receive permission in order to marry in New Spain. That document will give you lots of new insight in the life of D. Pedro de Choperena, who he was, where he traveled and what he did.

Best of luck,
Daniel Méndez de Torres Camino
São Paulo, Brasiln

Dispensa de Ultramarino

Thank you Daniel...
I've since found another connections back to Spain:

Juan Martin Suares del Real from Reinos de Castilla and h/w Lorenza de la Madera.
Hernado de Escobedo from Toledo and h/w Mari Illescas y Diaz.
Pedro Sanchez from Sevilla and h/w Margarita de Covarrubias.

So where do I search for the Dispensa's?

Saludos,
Roy

Dispensa de Ultramarino

Roy,

My great-grandfather was born in Spain and his Información Matrimonial has
a lot of the information that can be found in the Dispensa. However, you
should attempt to acquire both records.

The Dispenas are found in the Matrimonios of Guadalajara found at
http://goo.gl/z61Za

Claudia Casillas and other contributors are indexing the names in the
Dispensas at posting them at http://www.guadalajaradispensas.com/. The
surname Choperena doesn't show up in the index yet (I would have already
told you if it did) so you would have to go page by page in every single
volume that includes the year 1801 in order to find the Dispensa to find it
yourself. If you are going to take time to do that please index the page
and names found in each volume and send that info to Claudia.

Saludos,
Armando

Dispensa de Ultramarino

Armando,
Are the Dispensas de Ultramarinos found within the regular Matrimonial listings, or are they listed differently?  Thanks,  Alice

Dispensa de Ultramarino

Thanks so much, Armando.  Am I to understand that all Ultramarino's were required to be granted a dispensa?  If so, it would be great!  All my 1700's Spanish greatgrandfather's should be listed.  Thanks again,  Alice

My First Identified Spanish Ancestor

Roy,

Joaquín was born in Spain. The marriage document says he was "Español
celibato de 30 años de edad natural de los Reinos de Castilla en el de
Nabarra Obispado de Pamplona en la villa de Aranas h.l. de D. Pedro Jose
Choperena y de D. Maria Bautista Yndart." Natural in this case means
originally. The información matrimonial should also have information from
Spain that the priest in Totatiche would have requested for verification
for him to have an auto (license) to marry.

The marriage of D. Pedro Jose Choperena y de D. Maria Bautista Yndart took
place exactly on 25 Feb 1759 in Aranaz, Navarra.
