Just wondering - I found the marriage record (1688) where both my 8th GGF and GGM are listed as children of the church. Does anyone know the significance of this? Are they orphans? Did they come over from Spain with the Church? This is the first record that I find with this mention.

Thanks,

Ed

Espanol

Tengo curiosidad.

Gracias,

Eduardo

Hija de la iglesia

That would be as Linda said, parents unknown. The child was left at the doorstep of the church by person or persons unknown.

Hija de la iglesia

Alicia what do you think happens to door step babies (expuestos) were they usually turned over to the church? I seldom see them in the lineage of the family that baptized them.
Linda

Linda,

I wish I knew the answer. I also wonder about that. I know that in the Municipio of Nochistlan, the church took the indians under their wing as directed by the hierarchy and it was the indians who became the parish scribes and who received an education rather than the espanoles because they were taught by the church leaders.
