I’ve been ready the comments about Spanish and English language. This is me…..I know both languages very well I have kids and my kids know both languages very well also. I was born in Mexico but came to the US when I was little. My kids were born here and as baby I have spoken to them in both languages.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that, I’ve seen families that the parents were born in Mexico but the children were born in the US and….in some cases some children don’t speak Spanish at all and when I ask the parent if they child/children speak Spanish…..they say they don’t because they wish not to practice it.

So……parents pass away the children don’t speak Spanish they have children and of course their children will not speak Spanish either so…the Spanish language has been lost.

To me….I think it’s important that our children know both languages…I guess I want to keep the line going of who we really are, where did I come from, what language did my parents speak and my gg grandparents and so on.

I have to admit I hold some jealosy in that here in el norte, to see east Indian women in tradintional sari dress. They are proud of their heritage and still are trying to maintain their traditions. Perhaps its because for many they are a generation of new arrivals , and it may be in another generation, they will not be able to keep up the traditions.

Not that I want to go to the Mall in my sombrero, the climate here in the midwest gives us a 3 month summer. yet So much mexican culture has been set aside to fit in. I have to look hard to find a posada here, not as may quincineras, as before.. Perhaps its my perspective as I age ... or suppose this happens in each genreation and more so in a new country.
Please turn down the Reggeaton when you pull in my driveway ..

Hi David, I think its just when people arrive in the US, they want to Americanize, the dominant culture, eventhough the southwest and western US has very Spanish influence, the US was not prepared for the cession of Spain's and Mexico's territyorty hence why there are two leading cultures. A friend a long time ago thought Mexico was all about, "getting drunk, serapes, sombreros, tequila..etc." I have noticed times have changed, you dont find that many people wearing Serapes even in Mexico. I told him MExico is much complicated...just like any other country youll find different ethnic groups that have different traditions and customs. I quote my grandfather "If it's not made in Jalisco, it's not tequila" I remember when I lived in Jalisco for 8 months I used to wear the traditional clothes youll find, "Boots, sombrero. slacks.." I was only 7 or 8 -Daniel
