Has anyone seen – or is anyone in possession of – a copy of the book by
Ricardo Lancaster-Jones called “Haciendas de Jalisco y aledaños, 1506-1821?
I found it listed as being in the Mormon library, but I cannot seem to find
any place that sells the book. It was published 1974 in Guadalajara. It is
said to narrate the history of the haciendas in Jalisco from their origins
in New Galicia. I’m wondering if it names specific haciendas and their
owners…..

This seems to be a interesting but rare book. Please let us know if you
locate a copy. Meanwhile, next time I just happen to be at the Library of
Congress.....

"Haciendas de Jalisco y aledaños"

Thanks to all who responded to my question about this book. I was able to
obtain it through Interlibrary Loan and I have this copy (from Occidental
College Library) until May 12. Based on my cursory glance through the book,
I do not expect to find anything helpful for my own research. (I had been
hopeful that Hacienda El Salto would be mentioned.)

But I am listing the Table of Contents here in case other members might want
to order the book for their own research:
I. Como encontraron la Tierra los Conquistadores
II. Algunas Mercedes del Siglo XVI
III. Reestructuraciones del Siglo XVII
IV. Más cambios en el Siglo XVIII
V. Mayorazgos de Nueva Galicia y Provincia de Avalos
VI. Los propiedades Rusticas de la Iglesia en Nueva Galicia y Provincia de
Avalos, despues Intendencia de Guadalajara. Conclusiones

Some of the specific Haciendas mentioned are: La Venta del Astillero;
Toluquilla; Cabezon; Portillo; Mazatepec; Ahuacapan Miraflores; Ledezma; La
Punta; Santa Maria; Jaltomate; Palo Alto; Los Campos; Ojuelos; Penuelos;
Sauceda; Buenavista.

Unfortunately there is no index, so it is very difficult to find information
about a specific place easily.

Hacienda del Salto, Villanueva

Buenas Tardes:

SALUDOS.

Haciendas of Jalisco? There are a lot of Haciendas and Ex-Haciendas in our region of Northern Jalisco. I know that El Conde owned several including the one called, San Mateo of Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico.

The descendantes of El Conde are still there and have paintings of El Conde that they lended to the Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico. Museum. On a our community website of valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico there was an excellent video documentary of a lot of the Haciendas en the Valparaiso, Zacatecas, Mexico area. I will try to find that video.

Found some online links of pictures of Haciendas in Jalisco:

"Haciendas de Jalisco y aledaños"

Hi Susan,

Not sure where to purchase the book (besides the usual used booksellers like
abebooks.com) but according to WorldCat there are a few libraries in
southern California that own this book:

http://www.worldcat.org/title/haciendas-de-jalisco-y-aledanos-1506-1821…

Depending on its availability you could request it via your local library's
interlibrary loan.
