Por Mercedes Chavez | Dom, 11/03/2007 - 18:30

Hello, my name is Mercedes Chavez Romero and I am attempting to work on my
family tree. I always wanted to do this and I think the time has come to get
serious about it. My family is originally from Jalpa, Zacatecas. I have the
names of up to my great grandparents. I have obtained some information on the
town itself by going to various websites. I intend to go to Jalpa sometime this
year to confirm and obtain more information on my ancestry, as well as,
obtain some history on the town itself. I am also interested in the DNA testing
but am not sure exactly what company to order the kit from. Any information
anyone has on Chavez Romero Salazar Arechiga last names or a reputable DNA
testing company would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mercedes Chavez

Chavez, Salazar, Arechiga & Valenzuela from Jalpa, ZAC.

Mercedes,

My family is some how related to General Jesus Archiga through the Chavez side. Are you located in the So. Cal.? I have distant cousin surname Chavez that live in So. Cal.

Before Flying to Zacatecas

Mercedes:

I am sure that a trip to Jalpa would be a great learning experience but as many members will tell you, going to the locality is not necessarily the best way to do genealogical research.

For one, the best genealogical records in Mexico are church records and many priests are very reticent about letting people look at them especially for broad research. Many civil records have been lost or are very disorganized in the towns as well and often the state capitals are the only places where you can find records.

That being said, the Family History Library has films for Jalpa that should probably be where you should begin your search. Just go to http://www.familysearch.org and look up the nearest family history center to you where you can go and order and view the films.

Well your German ancestry might be connected with the Mennonites that
settled in Chihuahua, and was responsible for developing the famous, and most
delicious cheese, named after Chihuahua.

I got DNA tested with National Geographic's Genographic Project and their partnerns fom FamilyTreeDNA.With these companies, if you are planning on taking both Y-DNA (male ancestry) and mtDNA (female ancestry) tests, it may be a little cheaper if a male gets Y-DNA tested and then they use the same sample for the mtDNA test. Hi Mercedes - I also had my Y-DNA test and Mitochrondial test completed through Family Tree DNA. They are pretty reputable. I did the Mitochrondial test a couple of years ago and the Y-DNA 6 months ago. My brother's DNA was submitted and his Haplogroup is R1b1. I submitted the Mitochrondial and it was Haplogroup A. I didn't know that if you submit the male line you can get both Haplogroups.
good luck,
Yolanda

Hi Yolanda, I'm a match as far as haplogroup results go.. these are my numbers, will you share yours?
My mtdna goes back to Michoacan before 1800 and my fathers dna goes to Zacatecas back to 1750. I also used the same lab you did and was very satisfied with them and love the Mexico DNA site Gary Felix has set up so I submitted my results with them. Like you I didn't know at the time my brother could do both so I also did them separately... live and learn!

Hi Erlinda - I am a member of Gary Felix's DNA Surname Project. Here is the link which shows my brother Richard's Y-DNA results. I must confess that I haven't had much time to spend figuring out some of the data results. This is interesting though --- my father's lines go back to Chihuahua 1745. I remember him telling us when were little that his father told him that we were dark Irish. I use to laugh and tell him "surrre...dad...". Well -- I went on a Genealogy trip last year to meet my grandfather's brother's family who first setteled in Alamogordo New Mexico in the late 1800's, 1900's. I left my Ochoa family genealogy research with them and they forwarded my research and old photos to many Ochoa relatives I'd never met before.
A few weeks after my visit, I started getting email and phone calls from many distant Ochoa relatives from Arizona, Texas and New Mexico and they also heard from my grandfather's brother that they were Irish and German! I was shocked to hear this story because none of us ever knew each other growing up. If you check out my Y-Dna data on Gary Felix's site, it shows that we may have German background.

http://members.tripod.com/~GaryFelix/index63.htm
After my visit with the folks in Alamogordo, I heard stories about some folks dances that my grandfather and his brother's family use to do. That's another interesting story.

Anyway - check my stuff out on Gary Felix's website. I joined the project around 6 years ago I think and then did some more DNA refinment for the 37 marker test?? something like that. Fun stuff,
Yolanda

Yolanda, thank you and I will check out your brothers listing on the Gary Felix site.

Like you we discounted the stories my Grandpa Epitacio Castanon told abt his ancestors coming from Germany! Also like you the numbers for our dna suggest Gemany as a real possibility.. I owe Grandpa Castanon an apology for laughing at his stories and could kick myself for not listening with respect.... live and learn.. I wonder if my gr-grandkids will shake their heads at the stories I'm going to tell them!

thanks again, Linda in Everett

Linda,

with interest i read the names in your letter, including Chavez and Arechiga.

My interest is in San Matias, Pinos, Zacatecas, and am particularly interested in the Delgado families. Both of the above names figure in the tree that i have.

I can send you more concrete information if you are interested.
